I know this next bit is long and wordy, but I've kept it as short and sweet as I could (and hopefully while answering all questions you may have!)

Why Piano?

The piano is one of the most powerful and versatile instruments there is. Its layout makes music visible and logical, while its sound allows for huge emotional range. Whether it’s classical, blues, jazz, pop, or film music, the piano sits at the centre of it all; making it the perfect instrument for both understanding music and expressing yourself.  Whether it's your introduction to instrument playing (it's perfect for the job) or if you are learning it as a second instrument (again - perfect for the job) everyone can learnt the piano.

Who are lessons for?

Lessons are for children, teenagers, and adults — from complete beginners to more experienced players who want to deepen their musical understanding or explore new styles.

Do I need any prior musical experience?

No. Many students start from scratch. Lessons are built around where you are now, not where you’re expected to be.

What styles do you teach?

I teach across styles rather than locking students into one lane. Classical, jazz, blues, pop, and contemporary music all feature, depending on the student’s interests.

Do you teach both classical and jazz/blues?

Yes. Classical technique and repertoire can sit alongside jazz, blues, improvisation, and chord-based playing. I encourage students to see how styles connect rather than treating them as separate worlds.

What is your teaching approach?

My teaching balances solid technique with musical freedom. I focus on listening, understanding, pulse, and expression; not just playing the right notes. Piano should feel alive, not mechanical.

Are exams required?

No. Exams are optional. I’m happy to prepare students for graded exams, but many students learn purely for enjoyment, creativity, or personal growth.

How are lessons structured?

Lessons are tailored to the individual and usually include a mix of repertoire, technique, listening, theory in context, and practical musical skills.

How much practice is expected?

Consistency matters more than long hours. Even short, focused practice sessions can lead to strong progress.

What if I have limited time to practice?

Lessons can be adapted to busy schedules, with efficient practice strategies that fit around school, work, and life.

Do I need a piano or keyboard at home?

No. To begin the first few lessons, a piano is not necessary, just a mindset to learn! (Though if learning online a piano is necessary)

Where do lessons take place?

Lessons can take place where I'm based in Dorset, or online over video call.

How much do lessons cost?

£25 per hour, £20 per half hour

Can parents sit in on lessons?

Yes. Parents are welcome to sit in, especially for younger students.

How do cancellations work?

I'm easy going, I get we're all humans and can be ill/busy, give me some notice and we can either miss your lesson for that week, or we can reschedule for the day after/before depending on availability, I'll always do my best to fit you in.
